Pawapuri, situated 38 km from Rajgir, is one of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Jains. It was here, in the 6th century BCE, that Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, attained salvation (Nirvana) and was cremated.
1. The Water Temple
The Jal Mandir (Water Temple) is a spectacular white marble temple built in the middle of a large lotus-filled lake. Legend says that the demand for Lord Mahavira's holy ashes was so high that devotees scooped out vast amounts of soil from the site, creating the lake we see today.
2. The Stone Causeway
Devotees walk across a long stone bridge to reach the temple shrine, which houses ancient footprints of Lord Mahavira. The sight of the white temple reflecting in the lotus pond is deeply peaceful.
