Vikramshila University Ruins
Overview
Vikramshila was one of the two most important centers of learning in India during the Pala Empire, alongside Nalanda. Located near Bhagalpur, the excavated ruins feature a massive central stupa surrounded by 108 small shrines and monastic cells. It was globally renowned for the teaching of Vajrayana Buddhism and Sanskrit grammar.
History & Origins
Established by King Dharmapala in the late 8th century CE to raise the standards of Buddhist education. It flourished for over 400 years until it was destroyed in 1200 CE by Bakhtiyar Khilji.
