Sher Shah Suri Tomb: The Red Sandstone Taj of Sasaram

Sher Shah Suri Tomb: The Red Sandstone Taj of Sasaram

Built in the mid-16th century, the Tomb of Sher Shah Suri in Sasaram is a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic tomb architecture. Designed by the architect Aliwal Khan, this red sandstone mausoleum stands in the middle of a large, square artificial lake, appearing to float on the water.

1. The Founder of the Suri Empire

Sher Shah Suri was the founder of the Suri Empire in Northern India, famous for defeating the Mughal Emperor Humayun and constructing the Grand Trunk Road. His tomb is a massive octagonal structure topped by a grand dome, which is second in size only to the Taj Mahal.

2. Architectural Highlights

The tomb stands on a raised square platform, surrounded by stone kiosks. A long stone causeway connects the tomb to the mainland. The interiors feature highly detailed geometric carvings, arches, and calligraphic inscriptions on stone panels.

3. Travel Tips

Sasaram is well-connected by train and road. The tomb is open daily from sunrise to sunset. A small museum inside the complex exhibits stone sculptures and historic coins excavated from the Rohtas region.
