Sher Shah Suri Tomb
Overview
The mausoleum of Sher Shah Suri in Sasaram is a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic tomb architecture. Constructed entirely out of red sandstone, the octagonal tomb stands in the middle of a large artificial square lake. Connected to the mainland by a stone bridge, it features a grand dome spanning 22 meters and represents the transition from Lodi style to Mughal architectural elegance.
History & Origins
Built between 1540 and 1545 CE, the tomb was designed by the architect Aliwal Khan during the reign of Emperor Sher Shah Suri, the founder of the Sur Empire who defeated the Mughals and built the Grand Trunk Road.
Cultural Significance
Known as the "Second Taj Mahal of India" due to its symmetry and reflective pool beauty. It showcases early Afghan structural engineering.
