Overview

The Barabar Hill Caves are the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, located in the Jehanabad district. Carved out of massive granite monoliths during the Mauryan Empire (reign of Ashoka), they feature polished interior walls with mirror-like finishes and Buddhist inscriptions. The caves consist of two chambers, representing the origin of rock-cut temple architecture in India.

History & Origins

Constructed by Emperor Ashoka and his grandson Dasharatha for the monks of the Ajivika sect, these caves contain ancient Buddhist and Brahmi inscriptions.
