Perched on the Kaimur hills overlooking the Son River valley, Rohtasgarh Fort is one of the largest and most rugged forts in India. The fort's history dates back to the mythological King Harishchandra, who named it after his son Rohitashwa.
1. Strategic History
The fort spans over 40 sq km of hilltop plateau, heavily fortified with sheer stone walls and deep gorges. During the medieval period, it served as a strategic military base for Sher Shah Suri, Maharaja Man Singh of Jaipur, and Mir Qasim.
2. Palace and Temples
The ruins include the grand Shahi Masjid, Harishchandra Temple, Rohtasan Temple, and the majestic Man Singh Palace. The trek up the steep rocky path offers stunning panoramic views of the Son River.
3. Travel Guide
The fort is situated near Sasaram. Hiring a local guide is highly recommended for trekking the plateau. Carry sufficient water and food as there are no shops inside the ruins.
